I’m here to discuss the gut microbiome, which is the organ in my opinion to discuss most. For those of you who don’t know what the gut microbiome is, it is everything from your mouth to your colon, from entry to exit, and all the bits in between.
Your stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and all of the tiny creatures that live there. There are bacteria, fungi, viruses, and cells of these tiny critters living there.
Diversity is crucial in the gut, and we’ll go into this a little more detail later. So why is having a healthy gut so crucial? Well, it’s crucial for long-term health.
So, if you have a healthy gut, you’ll feel more energised, get sick less frequently, have better mental clarity, and ultimately have better emotional well-being.
Contrarily, a lot of research suggests that having a healthy gut is linked to conditions like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, and even emotional problems like anxiety and depression.
So, you are what you eat is today’s theme. You’re likely saying to yourself, “Yeah, you know, when I was a kid, my parents always used to tell me you are what you eat,” as you sit there.
As they tried to force broccoli, or brussels sprouts if you were really, really lucky, and other foods on me, the truth is that they are actually correct.
Poor eating can have two negative effects:
- You might not be able to get the nutrients you require to stay healthy.
- Your gut microbiome may even become completely damaged and altered, making it unable to properly digest food and produce the nutrients you need to function.
We’ll examine three molecules obtained through dietary intake today. You need to consume these items, starting with tryptophan. Tryptophan can be found in Turkey, but it can also be found in chia seeds and eggs.
Your body transforms tryptophan into a number of other really crucial molecules, two of which we’ll discuss today. One of them is serotonin, which is extremely important because it makes you happy, and the other is melatonin, which actually promotes sleep.
Another example is the substance tyrosine, which is an amino acid that can be found in foods like almonds, lentils, seeds, and edamame. We’ll talk about dopamine since tyrosine can be converted to a number of other very significant substances. You may have heard of the dopamine, which basically serves as a motivator.
Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, the fight-or-flight molecule, is therefore propelled by this initiative-focused behavior and is extremely beneficial when you’re on stage. Think about what would happen if you didn’t have these things.
As a result, you would either drool on your couch or, worse yet, run away from a mountain lion, the Emoji being yeah huh? You wouldn’t want this to occur, would you? Therefore, you need a body to react to these kinds of circumstances.
Third, we’ll discuss a substance known as indole 3 lactic acid (ILA). It can be found in fermented foods like pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir, all of which are extremely important.
ILA is very significant because when it enters your body, certain bacteria in your gut turn it into an acid known as IPA, or indole propionic acid.
One of the body’s most potent antioxidants is indole propionic acid. Again, you guys may be familiar with the term antioxidant, but let me explain what it means. Therefore, a wide range of chemical processes take place in your body, and many of them produce substances known as free radicals.
These are bad, they’re reactive species that go and damage your cells they damaged DNA and then ultimately can lead to things like cancer. These antioxidants come in and actually break down your free radicals keeping you healthy longer.
IPA very important so clearly eating certain types of foods is really necessary to keep you healthy, but it’s not sufficient. A healthy microbiome is needed to be able to execute these conversion processes that we’re talking about to take things out other molecules that are really important.
Let’s briefly discuss the characteristics of a healthy microbiome. I’ve tried to make this as simple as possible, but basically, each Emoji represents a particular type of bacteria. There are some that digest vegetables, while others digest meats, breads, and oils.
Your gut is home to many different species, so it has a very diverse population when it’s healthy. Let’s say you make the decision to only consume foods that are extremely high in fat, such as pizza, hot dogs, and ice cream.
If you train your body to do this, your gut will start making more and more of the bacteria that are used to seeing the foods you eat.
And eventually, you’ll change the ratios so that some bacteria will do better than the others. Because they aren’t being used, which can lead to a gut full of bacteria that aren’t very healthy and don’t come from many different places.
You might ask, “Can that be fixed?” The answer is yes, but it often takes a lot of time and effort. Sometimes you can’t fix it at all, because once the bacteria are gone, it’s hard to get them back.
So it’s really interesting that even if you hurt your gut, the body tries to make the right building blocks. On the bottom right, you can see a silhouette, and at the bottom, you can see a few emojis.
They’ve eaten, but there aren’t a lot of different kinds of bacteria in there. They are using the food you eat to make these compounds that will keep you healthy. But there aren’t enough of them and they aren’t doing their jobs right.
On the other side, you can see a silhouette of a person with many different emojis. And they can take in food, digest it, and spit out a lot of things that are really important for keeping you healthy.
The sad part is that many of the things we do in our daily lives are actually deadly to the microbiome. I love chips Most chips don’t have a lot of healthy things in them. For example, you won’t find tryptophan or ILA here.
Antibiotics are helpful medicines, but they kill bacteria. They kill all bacteria, not just bad ones. And because you kill off your microbiome so often, it doesn’t always come back.
You’ve probably heard that stress kills things and is bad. We could talk for 30 minutes about how stress affects the microbiome.
In fact, stress is very bad for your microbiome, your central nervous system, and the fact that your brain and gut are connected and talk to each other.
Think about it: when you’re stressed and have a headache, you feel awful. You often feel that stress in your stomach, like butterflies or anxiety, and you may have to go to the bathroom more.
They talk to each other all the time and know each other very well. This means that the more stressed you are, the more likely it is that you will hurt your microbiome.
The diversity of bacteria in the gut is negatively impacted by the fact that we live in such an aseptic society.
One of my favorite examples is that, a long time ago, kids used to play in the dirt and were exposed to all kinds of things. Now, kids go inside and watch TV or play on their phones, and the lack of diversity in their guts is being linked to a lot of diseases.
So, what are some easy things you can do to help your gut feel better? Well, we’ve talked about changing your diet, and we’ve also talked about ways to deal with stress, like using mindfulness, meditation, and breathing exercises.
Or working out is great Walking for 15 to 20 minutes a day can help you stay regular. It can, that’s what we do. It can help you feel less stressed, and it can even help certain kinds of bacteria grow.
And lastly, targeted supplementation. I’m not telling you to take a lot of different supplements, but if your body needs certain things, you might want to take a supplement.
